Montclair Farmhouse

This was an extensive renovation of a home in Montclair. The origins were built in the 1800s. Over the years many additions were added. The existing combination of rooflines posed design challenges, so we looked back to the original carriage house section of the house for inspiration and took the approach to honor the home's original farmhouse style. We began by reimagining the circulation and redefining how some of the rooms would be used. This required removing the original masonry fireplace and existing stairs to the second floor. Demolition revealed structural issues on the second floor that were beyond repair and this afforded us the opportunity to create a more functional second floor. The aesthetic direction was to create a modern interior and simple clean exterior that evoked the farmhouse style of the original part of the house.
